Journey through time - The Aistear Maze

The concept of pilgrimage/journey is an extremely important part of our spiritual history. There are many famous international places of pilgrimage that are associated with different cultures and beliefs. The monastic site of Iniscealtra has been an important place of pilgrimage and is also the inspiration for the journey/pilgrimage through the Aistear maze.

The illustrated text for the seven spaces in the maze was developed for the project by Dr. Eoin Grogan. The symbols and artefacts presented in the text have been replicated in timber, stone and foliage and installed in each of the seven spaces of the maze. The text ‘The Maze - Journey Through Time’ is a representation of Dr. Eoin Grogan’s original text with descriptions of the various symbols and artefacts that have been created.

Seven times on the walk through the maze the journey is interrupted and attention is drawn to people’s spirituality in a different time, under different circumstances and as part of an evolving landscape.

Within each space information is presented, providing an understanding of the spiritual beliefs at a particular time and with it are the associated symbols of that spirituality. The symbols represent an idea or a fixed point that allowed a person to engage with their personal spirituality or their personal view of the cosmos.

“At each point you are reminded that other people have travelled, other people have had spiritual beliefs, other people have engaged in pilgrimages in the past and you are part of a very long continuum of human behaviour, a search to understand ourselves in the cosmos, in the Universe we live in.”

Dr. Eoin Grogan (2005)
